Home Trust’s Rose Butera was recently named “Best Lender BDM of the Year” at this year’s annual CMA awards. We were able to spend a few minutes with Rose earlier this week to discuss what this award means to her and to learn more about her role at Home Trust.
Can you please tell us what is involved in being a Business Development Manager and maybe give us a quick overview of a typical day for you.
I guess the text book answer is that as a Business Development Manager I serve as a liaison between Home Trust and our mortgage broker partners but that doesn’t really get to the point of what I do. I believe a much better way to explain my role is to say that I do everything I can to help mortgage brokers get what they need so they can best serve their clients.
This means working directly with brokers to help them understand Home Trust’s line of mortgage products and how these products can be used to meet the varied needs of their clients. I also make sure that broker feedback is brought to the attention of the appropriate Home Trust team member as brokers are a tremendous source of expert information that we as a company can use to improve our service and product offering.
A very good example of how Home Trust worked with the broker community to address a product gap is the Equityline Visa that Home Trust created to help homeowners access the equity in their homes. Combined with the convenience of a Visa credit card, this is an ideal way to use home equity for such things as to fund renovation projects; self-employed individuals also use our Equityline Visa as a line of credit to help them operate their business.
As to describing a typical day, I spend a considerable amount of time on the road visiting with brokers. On the days when I’m in the office, I’m often working with Home Trust’s mortgage officers to make sure that deals from my brokers are progressing and that we have everything that’s required to provide approvals and release funds.
What is it about the mortgage industry that keeps you motivated each day?
I think what motivates me most is being able to help mortgage brokers deliver a very important service to Canadian home buyers. I appreciate that for many borrowers the process of arranging a mortgage can be very intimidating, and being able to play a part in helping to make this just a little easier gives me a genuine sense of accomplishment.
You were obviously very moved during your acceptance speech at this year’s CMA awards – what does receiving this award mean to you?
Well, it means more than I can possibly say, and the fact that I was nominated by the brokers makes this extra special. Keep in mind that I have been working in this industry for some time now, and I know my brokers well and consider many of them to be friends. I never want to let my brokers down and I appreciate being recognized with this award.
Receiving this award also highlights the talent of the people I work with at Home Trust and even though I was singled-out for the honour, the truth is that this accolade belongs to the entire Home Trust team. My success is a direct result of the collective efforts of many people at Home Trust and I am proud to be part of the Home Trust team. I am grateful that I get the opportunity to do something I truly enjoy and I consider myself very fortunate.
When you do manage some time for yourself, how do you like to spend your free time?
I really don’t have hobbies as such and I have to admit that I am a bit of a workaholic, but when I do have quiet time, I enjoy reading and listening to music. I’m also a movie buff and I make great use of my HBO subscription but more than anything, my greatest happiness is spending time with my family.
I come from a large family and have many fond memories of holiday gatherings centred mostly around the kitchen. We’re more spread out these days but family get-togethers are still frequent and still involve a lot of food!
I think this explains why I gravitated towards the mortgage lending industry as so many important milestones in my life, and the lives of my family, are tied to being together in the family home. I hope that my efforts help to bring others the same joy that I’ve experienced.
